The Ultimate Squarespace Build Checklist

We’ve built a ton of Squarespace sites over the past few years, and between our own experience and Squarespace’s Help Center, we’ve assembled the ultimate launch checklist, complete with deep links to Squarespace’s documentation.

We’ve built a checklist in Notion and in Todoist - two of the most popular productivity apps - as well as a good ol’fashioned PDF. Git yours for free!

Squarespace Checklist as PDF, Notion Page, and Todoist Project

It’s easy to build a website, but it’s not simple. Here are a few FAQs.

How do I set up my Squarespace site?

Just like you eat an elephant - one bite step at a time. And we’ve gathered and organized all those steps in one place.

How many steps will it take me to launch my site?

Our checklist has 97 steps - but you’ll only need all of those if you use every single feature of Squarespace. Don’t need a shop? Subtract 11 steps. Don’t need a blog? Minus 13 steps. Et cetera.

Public Service Announcement

Our templates only need about half as many steps to launch as a site built from scratch! Check β€˜em out.

And some steps are more important than others. We’ve grouped the steps from each section into Required, Recommended, and… Extra Credit?

What’s actually in the checklist?

These are the high-level categories:

1. Perfect your site's style 🎨

This section covers stuff like site title and logo, style tweaks, and the favicon.

2. Finalize your pages 🚧

This section covers things like page links, mobile layouts, business info, and checklists for specific page types like blogs, events, and the shop.

3. Check images πŸ–ΌοΈ

This section deals with common image problems and rookie mistakes that a lot of folks make with their images.

4. Check domains and integrations πŸ”—

This section covers domain setup, email, and the like.

5. Optimize for search engines πŸ”

SEO is a world, and this section of our checklist is your road atlas.

6. Publish πŸš€

How to take your site live, including the things you need to do off-site (with Google, mostly) to get your site indexed.

7. Promote your site after publishing πŸ“£

More ways to get your site seen.

Don’t Miss Out

Most of these recommendations are scattered around Squarespace’s Help Center… and we’ve gathered and organized those in one place.

But some of them aren’t. There are some weirdly important action items, and extremely helpful tips, that for whatever reason are nowhere to be found in their guides.

If you work through this checklist to launch your website, you’ll have done way more than most businesses to start strong online.

How much does the checklist cost?

Nothing. Zilch. Nada. It’s a free resource for people who like free stuff. We don’t want money to get in the way of you getting a website you can be proud of. You’ll be added to our email list, which you can unsubscribe from anytime.
